Success in school is usually shown by good grades, and good grades are usually a result of effective studying. The following tips will help you study effectively and get better grades.
Listen actively when in class: Listen carefully when the teacher is teaching and when possible, take notes.
Make your presence known: Participate in classroom discussions and endeavour to ask and answer questions.
Attend all classes: Don't be a truant, you may find it hard to catch up on the things you missed while you stayed away from school.
Use your textbooks: Your teachers merely show you the door, it is up to you to walk in. After your teacher must have explained a topic, get a textbook and read more on it, work on examples where applicable.
Attempt assignments yourself: You are usually given assignments to help you practice what has been taught, not as a punishment. Do assignments immediately after school and attempt them yourself, don't copy from a friend. You can later seek help if you get stuck.
Use your time wisely: Don't procrastinate, tackle hard work first. Do what you have to do on time and take breaks in between.
Stop cramming: Yes, cramming makes you feel like you've done some studying, but what you read can be lost easily.
Use memory tricks: Try simple tricks to help you remember important aspects. You can use a song or relate what you've just learnt to something you already know, this way it sticks.
When preparing for a test or exam, study early and often. You can read in a group with your friends where possible. Read up on a particular topic and have your friends ask you questions, while you try to recall and answer them. Also remove any distractions. Don't leave room for frequent disturbance as that little interference could affect your concentration.
Study in short intervals of 30-60 minutes, then take a break, 5 minutes break is alright.
Also, you must have the right attitude, feel confident that you can achieve the grades you want. After studying, relax and get a good night rest. Finally during test and exams, read all instructions carefully and plan your answers before writing.
